Army Day is being observed across the country today. It is celebrated on 15th January every year. India's 73rd Army Day is being celebrated this year. The day is celebrated at New Delhi and all army headquarters with military parades, military exhibitions and other celebrations. On the occasion of Army Day, the entire country remembers the gallantry, indomitable courage, valour and sacrifice of the army. Indian Army Day is celebrated on 15th January every year in honour of Field Marshal KM Cariappa. On this day in 1949, India's last British commander-in-chief, General Francis Butcher, was replaced by the present Lieutenant General K M. Cariappa. He took command of the Indian Army in the Indo-Pak War in 1947.

After independence, many administrative difficulties started arising in the country and then the Army had to come forward to control the situation. The President of the Indian Army was still of British origin. On January 15, 1949, Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa became the first Indian Army chief of India. There were about 2 lakh soldiers in the army at that moment. Army Day was celebrated on 15th January every year since KM Cariappa was made army chief.

On 15th January every year, there are parades of soldiers and different regiments and tableaux are drawn. Army Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year. Cariappa was the first officer who was given the rank of Field Marshal. The Indian Army was commanded in the Indo-Pak War in 1947. Cariappa retired in the year 1953 and passed away at the age of 94 years in 1993.
