Guwahati: Five people have been arrested along with a total of 45 kg of gold recovered from various places in Assam in the last 24 hours. This has revealed that Guwahati has become a major hub for gold smuggling. Gold being smuggled from Myanmar is being transported to Assam and elsewhere in the country via Manipur.

The Intelligence Revenue Directorate has seized 18.5 kg gold from Karbi Anglong district in Assam, 700 grams from Borjhar airport and 25.7 kg gold from Siliguri district in West Bengal based on secret information. National highways of Karbi Anglong district have emerged as the largest smuggling corridor. The Directorate of Intelligence Revenue has arrested two men from Karbi Anglong who have been identified as Tari Mansoor (20) and Iqbal Hussain (31) in Thoubal district of Manipur. Both were carrying 18.5 kg of gold biscuits hidden in the car.

The value of the seized gold is said to be around six crores. On the basis of the statement of these two, the Siliguri team of the Directorate, running a campaign, seized 25 kg of gold, which is being reported to be worth ten crores. Aamir Khan (21) and Mohammad Feroz (24) have been arrested in this case.
