Assam-Meghalaya border dispute: Conrad Sangma & Himanta Biswa Sarma discuss issue

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma met in Guwahati on Saturday for a closed-door discussion. The meeting took place in a city hotel.

Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, had previously stated that Assam and Meghalaya have achieved a 98 percent agreement on resolving the boundary issue between the two states in six areas of contention. Following Saturday's meeting, both chief ministers are slated to meet with union home minister Amit Shah in a joint meeting.

In the "first phase," six of the 12 areas of disagreement will be addressed in order to settle the decades-long border conflict between Assam and Meghalaya.The following areas of contention will be addressed in the first phase: Hahim, Gizang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillingkata, and Ratacherra.

According to the regional committees' recommendations, Assam would obtain control of 18.51 sq km of the 36.79 sq km of disputed land taken up for settlement in the first phase, while Meghalaya will get possession of 18.28 sq km.  "Common people are angry," he continued. And their rage becomes more with each new day. This anger will turn up in the elections."

For the past several days, Sudip Roy Barman and Asish Saha have been touring various regions of the state to meet with those "who had played a key role in dethroning the Left in 2018."
