KOLKATA: At least seven persons, including four girls and two boys were killed and equal numbers of people were injured after a speeding car ran over pedestrians in West Bengal?s South 24 Parganas district on Monday.

According to locals, the driver of the car was under the influence of alcohol, when he hit the pedestrians, killing four girls and two boys, all students of a school in Bishnupur, as well as one parent of the student. The driver managed to flee the spot after the accident.

The seven injured have been rushed to a hospital in Kolkata. They have been kept under observation and continue to be in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, locals staged a blockade protesting against the rash driving and were seen vandalising the car. They also pelted stones at police officials who rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Later, policemen were seen resorting to lathicharge to disperse the agitating locals.

On the other hand, a huge contingent of district police officials have been deployed at the spot to maintain the law and order situation there and they have also begun a lookout for the absconding car driver.
