BERLIN: Prior to the crucial group matchup against his previous team Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski's goal total is remarkable beyond belief.

The 34-year-old Pole is among the competition's top scorers with 89 Champions League goals, including 69 he scored for the 2020 triple winner.

Since the 2017-18 season, the Pole has scored 49 goals, more than Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema, who has 35.

The Bayern defenders appear to be practising quite hard in preparation for the group matchup on Tuesday.

The Bavarian defenders surrounding Matthijs de Ligt, Benjamin Pavard, Lucas Hernandez, Dayot Upamecano, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer regularly attend advanced training sessions to stay current with the Barca spearheads..

Lewandowski is known for scoring 67 of his goals from within the penalty area, so keeping him out of the area or maintaining close contact with two players is reportedly one of Bayern's biggest problems.

With 68.1 percent of his goals coming from regular playing action, the Pole has evolved over the years into what is thought of as a playing striker who is heavily involved in his team's field activities, including free kicks.

Bayern is thinking about having a lot of ball possession in order to keep Lewandowski off the ball as often as possible.

For Neuer, it may be interesting to note that 80% of the goals scored by his former teammate were flat shots, with the remaining 20% finding the net through the middle.

De Ligt is rumoured to be concerned with maintaining airborne control and monitoring the Pole's heading prowess.

Jerome Boateng, a former defender for Bayern, is optimistic that Bayern would gain from Lewandowski's eight-year expertise and the hundreds of training sessions he has participated in.

However, the forward's desire for goals doesn't appear to have diminished despite the transfer to Barcelona.

When the Spanish team thrashed underdog Viktoria Plzen 5-1 last week, he became the first player in Champions League history to have scored a hat-trick in a single game for three separate clubs.
