Supreme Court says BCI proposes to frame rules to curb lawyers' strikes, boycotts

New Delhi: The Bar Council of India has asked the apex court to frame rules to punish lawyers who were allegedly involved in the strike. Those lawyers also proposed to take action, which provoked other lawyers to stay away through social media, refusing to take part in court proceedings. The BCI has informed the apex court about the proposal to take action against advocates. The Supreme Court praised the BCI's proposal.

According to media reports, senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, chairman of the BCI, told a bench of Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice MR Shah that it has convened a meeting with the Council at all times in this regard. Mishra told the apex court that 'we convened a meeting of the council at all times with the BCI. We propose to frame rules to prevent strike boycotts, rules are being framed to punish bar association members for going on strike without proper justification.'

According to media reports, the apex court bench had sought the help of the BCI (Bar Council of India) chairman to deal with the issue of lawyers' strikes. The bench on Friday was hearing a suo motu cognizance case taken to deal with the issue. In which BCI put forward this proposal.
