On Thursday, Indian Former footballer Bhaichung Bhutia has launched his political party "Hamro Sikkim". He announced the party name at the Press Club of India in Sikkim. Yesterday, the footballer Bhutia has declared his plan to float a new party on Twitter. He took this step months after breaking away from the Trinamool Congress.

According to the reports from TOI, in the report published on January 30, it indicates Bhutia would resign TMC eyeing a larger political role in Sikkim. At that time only Bhutia had even expressed this to his party leadership saying he wasn’t interested to join any political party. But he also stated that he wanted to be part of a larger political platform supporting Sikkim’s cause in New Delhi.

In February, Bhutia officially resigned from the TMC. He had switched to politics and joined the Mamata Banerjee-led party in 2013. He joined the party after two years from retiring as a professional football.

During the 104-day Darjeeling strife, the drives between Bhutia and TMC had increased irreversibly. Bhutia, who originally comes from Sikkim, had gone against the party line and voiced his support for the separate state of Gorkhaland. Bhutia had unsuccessfully fought the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from the Darjeeling electorate. He lost to union minister and MP S S Ahluwalia.
