Indian farmer's son to receive Grinel award from US, will get cash reward of Rs 70 lakh

Patna: Born into a farmer's family in Hamjapur village under Gaya district of Bihar, Shafiqur Rahman Khan will be awarded the Grenfell Prize in the US. He will also be gifted a million dollars, or about Rs 70 lakh, with honour. Shafiqur is being given this honour for trying to end Indian bridal smuggling. She has also done a number of actions for women's rights.

Shafiqur is the first Indian to receive these awards. Shafiqur points out that apart from giving him this honour, the university has included his work in his course. Shafiqur deals with social work from the age of about 15. He is presently working in the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam etc. Shafiqur claims that he has freed about 5000 women so far.

He points out that he came to Delhi in 2004. Here he joined the Bonded Labour Liberation Front Organisation. In 2006, the institution of The Empire People was formed. He has also travelled 300 km on foot to raise awareness against female foeticide. His partner Shaukat Ali points out that Shafiqur had initially travelled on this journey alone, but today he has produced 70 teams all over the country.
