Patna: Bihar officially unveiled its caste census report on Monday, revealing that approximately 63% of the state's population belongs to the backward and extremely backward classes. According to Vivek Kumar Singh, the Additional Chief Secretary of Bihar, the state's total population exceeds 13 crores.
The caste census report delineates that 27% of the state's population falls under the backward class category, while 36% belongs to the extremely backward class category. Addressing a press briefing, Vivek Kumar Singh stated, "The report of the caste-based census conducted in Bihar has been released. Backward class in Bihar is 27.13%. The extremely backward class is 36.01%, General category is 15.52%. The total population of Bihar is more than 13 crores."
Yadavs, constituting approximately 14.27% of the total state population, are the largest OBC subgroup. Among the OBCs, they hold the largest share of the population. Notably, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav belongs to this OBC community. The Kurmis, to which Chief Minister Nitish Kumar belongs, make up 2.87% of the population.
The decision to conduct a caste census in Bihar was made last year, leading to legal challenges in the Patna High Court. Senior advocate CS Vaidyanathan, representing the NGO 'Youth for Equality,' contested the survey, arguing that it violated people's right to privacy. However, the High Court dismissed the pleas opposing the state government's decision to conduct a caste-based survey, clearing the way for the census to proceed.
