Guwahati: In the Nimati Ghat accident on September 13, Dibrugarh Police arrested the owner of the boat involved in the accident. One of the two boats was a government passenger ferry belonging to the Department of Inland Water Transport. And the other was a public boat. The government boat was coming from Majuli while another boat was moving in the opposite direction. Assam's Jorhat court has granted bail to the owner of the second boat on September 23.

A boat named Maa Kamala capsized after it collided with another ferry MB Tipkai at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat around 4 pm. Mother Kamala was leaving from Nimti Ghat when she hit MB Tipkai coming from Majuli. Pani Ram Kalita's boat was involved in a collision between two boats on September 8, 2021, in which one was confirmed dead while some were found missing. Boats run by government and private parties are the lifeline for the islanders. Privately operated boats do not issue any tickets and hence they count the passengers traveling. Officials said that according to various sources, there were at least 70 people on the boat

All six persons were arrested in connection with the boat accident on Saturday after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Jorhat police to register criminal cases against those responsible for the tragic incident.
