AJMER:  A 24-year-old bride from Rajasthan's Bhilwara is said to have been banished by her in-laws due to their archaic ideas of chastity, forced to take an illegal virginity test on her first night in her new home, and then endured the humiliation of a khap panchayat trial that resulted in a penalty of Rs 10 lakh that will be used for rituals to "purify" her.

A 24-year-old woman who had been humiliated three times and her family reported the matter to the police on Saturday. They accused her husband, her in-laws, and the khap panchayat of pressuring them for compensation during the previous four months. The complainant was physically abused by the complainant's spouse and his family prior to their summons to the khap panchayat, according to the FIR.

The bride reportedly told her in-laws that she had been raped by a neighbour before her wedding after the occurrence involving the social evil of "kukadi pratha," which occurred in a village of Bhilwara on May 11, according to DSP Surendra Kumar. On May 18, a few days ahead of the community elders' scheduled announcement of their decision, she reported a rape to the Subash Nagar police station.

On May 31, the woman's family was ordered to pay Rs 10 lakh for the puja by the khap panchayat, laying the stage for the alleged persecution that would ensue until they had the confidence to report the in-laws and the village community to the police.

Kumar said, "We have registered a case under 498A (coercing a woman to meet any unlawful demand), 384 (extortion), 509 (insulting the modesty of woman) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. The fact that the identity of the victim has been revealed by the khap panchayat in is also a crime".

Ironically, the police claimed that a daughter of the family who is currently under investigation for the alleged crime committed herself a year prior after going through a similar experience.
