Shortly before on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura late on Sunday night, a BSF commanding officer was attacked by suspected cattle smugglers. A senior official said Deepak Mandal, an officer of the 145th battalion of the Border Defense Force, was in critical condition and had been taken to Kolkata for treatment. He said that the incident occurred late at two o'clock near Belardepa border outpost in Siphijala district when the officer was allegedly hit by a four-wheeler used by smugglers.

According to the information received, he told that he was patrolling along with his team in the area to keep an eye on the cattle smugglers and illegal activities on the international border without fence. Mandal saw some cattle smugglers and challenged them. The guards and the driver accompanying them had also tried to stop him. He said, a group of 25-member smugglers were carrying bricks, sticks and axes. On being challenged, the smugglers tried to surround the officer and patrol party. Meanwhile, the smugglers hit the officer from behind with his vehicle. The officer has suffered serious injuries to his feet and head and his condition is said to be critical.

The officer told that to overcome the situation, a BSF personnel accompanying him fired five rounds of AK rifle. He told that the area has been under siege, the same officials are still investigating this matter.
