NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal for the second phase of the "National Program on High-Efficiency Solar Photovoltaic Modules" production-linked incentive (PLI) programme.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has proposed a plan with a budget of Rs 19,500 crore that intends to produce solar photovoltaic modules with a Giga Watt (GW) scale of efficiency.

To decrease reliance on imports for renewable energy, the initiative aims to create an ecosystem in India for the production of high-efficiency solar PV modules. In addition, it will support the government's Atamnirbhar Bharat initiative and create jobs, Anurag Thakur, the minister of information and broadcasting, said the media following the Cabinet meeting.

Manufacturers of solar PV systems will be selected through a transparent selection procedure. According to government sources, the plan would establish a manufacturing capacity of around 65,000 MW per year for completely and partially integrated solar PV modules.

It will also assist in providing employment for as many as 1,95,000 people directly and nearly 7,80,000 people indirectly. The programme will ensure an import substitution of about Rs. 1.37 lakh crore and promote research and development to increase the efficiency of solar PV modules.
