Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court granted permission to West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to visit Sandeshkhali, where protests erupted over allegations of sexual abuse of women by a local TMC leader and his supporters. However, the court stipulated that the BJP leader must refrain from delivering any "provocative speeches" during his visit.
Additionally, Suvendu Adhikari was directed not to engage in any "unlawful activities" while in Sandeshkhali. Adhikari had sought intervention from the Calcutta High Court after being barred by police from visiting Sandeshkhali for the second time last week. The court's ruling permits him to visit the area accompanied by security personnel.
Furthermore, the Calcutta High Court suspended the prohibitory orders implemented in Sandeshkhali under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The court had previously invalidated the order on February 13 but granted the state authorities the opportunity to request the reinstatement of such measures for the specific areas affected by the disturbances.
Despite the court's decision, the district administration reimposed restrictions on movement in certain designated areas of Sandeshkhali the following day, on February 14.
