Can EVM be hacked? SP creating ruckus again before UP elections results

New Delhi: Ahead of the results of the elections, the excitement over EVMs has once again increased and there have been allegations of irregularities in the counting of votes. Samajwadi Party (SP) national president and former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav has alleged that the elections were rigged. Akhilesh alleged that three vehicles loaded with EVMs were seized in Varanasi, two vehicles had gone out, but the third was stopped by SP  workers.

After this, the SP has also demanded to install a jammer at the counting centre. At the same time, the Election Commission has responded by saying that the EVMs found in the vehicles were being taken for the purpose of training and they have not been used in the elections. For the past few years, questions have been raised on EVMs before elections and after the results. Except for the BJP, every political party has been claiming EVM hacking. However, the Election Commission says that the EVM is completely safe and cannot be hacked.

A committee was formed to look into the allegations of EVM hacking and tampering. This committee was formed by the Election Commission. The committee submitted its report in May 2019. In this report, two arguments were made as to why EVMs cannot be hacked or tampered with-

1- The EVMs that the Election Commission uses are stand-alone machines. It is neither controlled by a computer nor connected to the Internet or a network, so it is impossible to hack it. Apart from this, the software used in the EVMs is made by engineers of government companies belonging to the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Atomic Energy. The source code of this software is not shared with anyone.

2- The EVM machine used in India has two units. One controlling unit (CU) and the other balloting unit (BU). These two are separate units and are divided separately during elections. If any one of the units is tampered with, the machine will not work. So the committee said that there is no scope for tampering or hacking the EVMs.
