UNITED NATIONS : Catherine Russell of the United States has been named the new executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), making her the organization's fourth female leader.

"It is an honour and a joy to join UNICEF and contribute to its extraordinary work for children at this critical time. UNICEF is spearheading the charge to preserve children's rights and futures at a time when millions of children throughout the world are still suffering from the effects of the Covid pandemic and other crises. I'm excited for the work ahead of me." Russell remarked.

Russell takes over from Henrietta Fore of the United States, who resigned in July 2021 to attend to a family health emergency but offered to continue on until her replacement was named. Russell served in the US government as an assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel under President Joe Biden prior to her new post at the UN.

She was the US Department of State's ambassador-at-large for global women's issues from 2013 to 2017. She formerly worked as the White House's deputy assistant to the president under President Barack Obama. Russell graduated from Boston College and the George Washington University Law School with a Bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctorate.
