New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre on Friday constituted the National Dam Safety Authority to work towards the prevention of dam-related accidents, their safety and resolution of inter-state issues. The Dam Safety Bill was approved by parliament on December 8 last year.

The Bill provides for monitoring, inspection, operation and maintenance of dams earmarked for the prevention of disasters associated with dam breaches. It also provides for the setting up of a Dam Safety Committee of India and a National Dam Safety Authority and provides an institutional mechanism to ensure the safety of dams. A gazette notification issued by the Jal Shakti Ministry on Thursday said, "The government is constituting an authority, which will be identified as the National Dam Safety Authority. It will exercise its powers as a national authority under the law and discharge its obligations."

"It has been appointed on February 18, 2022, and will come into existence from this day," it said, adding that the authority will be headed by a chairman and will be assisted by five members who will head its five units.
