New Delhi: The Government of India has banned the export of wheat with immediate effect. Its exports have now been put in the category of 'banned' goods. One of the major reasons for this is the steep rise in wheat prices in the international market. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued an official notification on Friday evening informing about the government's decision. However, export orders for which a letter of credit has been issued before May 13 will be allowed to be exported.
The Government has also taken this decision keeping in view the prices of foodgrains in the country under control, ensuring food security and keeping in view the needy developing and neighbouring countries (especially in view of the Sri Lanka crisis). The government in its order has made it clear that the export of wheat will be possible for the countries which the Government of India will allow. In this regard, the Government will make a decision based on the request of the Government of the needy developing countries so as to ensure food security there also.
The notification also states, "The Government of India is committed to providing food security to the country, neighbouring countries and other developing countries. Especially in those countries where this sudden change in the prices of wheat in the global market has had the opposite effect and their access to an adequate supply of wheat is not possible.''
