New Delhi: After the tough stand of the Supreme Court on the collegium, the central government has softened. The Center has assured that it will look into the recommendation of names of 44 judges for the High Courts within 3 days. The Central government told the apex court on Friday that it was ready to adhere to the deadline for taking action on the recommendations of the collegium. Prior to the assurance, the Supreme Court, while pulling up the Center for delaying the recommendations of the Collegium, had asked whether third-party interference was also included in it.

The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition on the delay in the appointment of judges to the High Courts, had asked the government to clear the pending names at the earliest. The Supreme Court pulled up the Center for delaying the Collegium's recommendations for the transfer of Supreme Court judges and asked whether third-party interference was involved. The Supreme Court said that until the government brings a new law, the system that exists today should be followed. In fact, this comment of the apex court came after the statement of Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, in which he said that 'appointment of judges by judges is not an ideal system'. Kiren Rijiju's statement was about the system of courts, in which the rule of 'judge's son will become a judge'. i.e, Judges only recommend any other name of their choice and from that the Central Government has to choose judges. The Union Law Minister says that this leaves deserving claimants behind.

However, today on Friday, the Central Government has assured the Supreme Court that it will adhere to the deadline and will send the names of 44 judges for the High Courts within three days. The government, on its part, assured the court that the judicial appointment process would be expedited and the timelines prescribed in Supreme Court judgments would be adhered to.
