Centre approves exclusive women's portal for research grants, funds

NEW DELHI: The introduction of an exclusive portal for CSIR Council's CSIR-ASPIRE program's research grants and funds for women scientists was announced by Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday, March 9. The portal will be functional with effect from 1 April, 2023.

The Minister said that a request for suggestions from scientists will open on March 8, during the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research's (CSIR) observance of International Women's Day.

Singh continued by saying that this project supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to promote "Nari Shakti" and empower women. This is another inspiring step in the Prime Minister's direction of putting Nari Shakti at the forefront of India's development journey as we move closer to Amrit Kal.

He claimed that over the past nine years, the government has introduced several welfare programmes with the goal of empowering women and putting them in charge of India's growth. His work is helping women get past societal hurdles and achieve their goals.

According to the minister, women make up 68% of the 2 crore PM Awas-Gramin beneficiaries, and more than 23 crore MUDRA loans have been given to women recipients. According to the NFHS-5 survey, India's sex ratio has improved for the first time to 1,020 women for every 1,000 men.

The minister said that, PM Modi has made releasing women from their shackles and releasing them from the grind of daily life a fundamental goal of policy development.

According to a statement from the ministry of science and technology, "the proposal for inviting research grant proposals from women scientists under Extramural Research Scheme, was approved during the 200th meeting of the Governing Body of CSIR on December 17, 2022, under the chairmanship of Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

To conduct R&D in the primary fields of science and engineering, namely the life sciences, chemical sciences, physical sciences, engineering sciences, and inter/trans disciplinary sciences, only women scientists from around the nation will be able to apply for research funds.

The funds will be used for personnel (JRF/SRF/RA), contingencies, and small pieces of equipment. The ministry said, "In general, the overall budget of a research proposal, including the stipend of the research fellow, should not exceed the limit of 25-30 lacs.

The Central Leather Research Institute of the CSIR has been offering women entrepreneurs a 15% discount on CSIR technology in addition to various training programmes covering the full range of CSIR domains.
