One kilogram of onion is being given free in Thane, Maharashtra after shopping from a clothes shop. The shop owner said that one kilogram of onion is being provided to customers on the purchase of items worth Rs 1,000 from their clothes shop. He said, the number of customers has increased since the inception of the scheme. Onion prices have crossed Rs 100 per kg in almost all the markets of the country for the last several weeks. One of the employees said that work on the Sheetal Handloom of Ulhasnagar was noticed on Saturday when the owner announced the scheme of onion free with a saree.

In his statement he said, Onion is being sold here at Rs 130 per kg. Therefore, on purchasing a cloth of Rs 1,000, we are giving 1 kilogram of onion for free. There has been a huge increase in the number of customers. Onion prices have increased 5 times in a year to Rs 101.35 per kg on average in big cities of the country. Due to this, domestic production of onion is estimated to decline by 22% in the Kharif and Late-Kharif seasons (summer sowing). The government has given this information in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. In the last one month, prices have increased by 81%.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Danve Rosaheb Dadarao said that on Tuesday (December 10), the average daily price of onion was Rs 101.35 per kg, compared to Rs 55.95 and a month ago. The previous year it was Rs 19.69 per kg. Onion is a seasonal crop and is cultivated during Rabi (March to June), Kharif (October to December) and Late Kharif (January to March). Meanwhile, onion produced in the Rabi season comes in the market.
