Indian men's badminton coach Vimal Kumar on Sunday hoped that the historic Thomas Cup victory will have the same impact on the game as the 1983 World Cup victory did during cricket. Apart from World Championships medallists Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth, the world number 8 pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have won a memorable victory, beating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final played in Bangkok.
Vimal Kumar has said on the historic victory that I have fallen short of words to describe it. We always had hope but the way the players played, they did well. It was wonderful. We had such a bad record against Indonesia and it was great to win 3-0. When India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983, the excitement was on the 7th sky but cricket was always a very popular sport and I hope that with this performance in badminton now, this game will become equally popular.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a reward of Rs 1 crore for the players of the Indian Men's Badminton team who created history by winning the Thomas Cup title on Sunday.
