Coal India's subsidiary North Eastern Coalfields has been found guilty of suspected illegal coal mining in Assam.

According to investigation report, the North Eastern Coalfields reportedly extracted coal worth Rs 4872 crore without obtaining mining rights. Justice BP Katakey's one-man commission was established after the Assam government launched an investigation into claims of illicit mining in Assam's Digboi forest division in July 2020.

The Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve includes the Digboi forest division.  The BP Katakey commission recommended that the Assam government collect the total money from the North Eastern Coalfields. According to the panel's findings, the North Eastern Coalfields has taken coal worth almost Rs 4900 crore from regions where it does not have mining rights since 2003. The company's mining activities in these locations were illegal. "The said stage-I clearance provided by the government of India is writ big on the said breach of the requirements of the 1980 Act," the report continued.
