State Congress President Ripun Bora on Tuesday wrote a letter to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to intervene immediately regarding the gas leakage from the oil well of Oil India Ltd, located in Assam's Tinsukia district. In this paper, he sought immediate intervention by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to gain control over the situation and to deploy an expert team to control the situation.
Ripun Bora said in the letter that this leak has been going on continuously for the last 14 days, causing panic among the people living around the area. There has been a threat to people's lives and property. In addition, natural gas leaks have damaged large areas of agriculture, contaminated river water and caused serious air pollution. In the letter, Bora alleged that neither Dharmendra Pradhan nor any senior official of the Petroleum Ministry visited the spot. He said that it is very surprising and unfortunate that till now neither you nor any senior official of the Petroleum Ministry visited the spot to take stock of this situation. Despite the fact that this incident is a serious concern worldwide.
Apart from this, Bora further said in the letter, 'I request you to visit the spot with senior officials of your ministry. Instruct Oil India Limited to give adequate compensation to all affected persons in the area due to this incident.'' There was uncontrolled leakage of gas from the well for the last 14 days and caught fire on Tuesday. The fire that started in the afternoon was so fierce that it could be seen from a distance of more than two kilometres.
