AHMEDABAD: The Congress party today, January 17, appointed Amit Chavda as its legislature party leader in Gujarat and Shailesh Parmar as the deputy leader.

The AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal in a communication to Gujarat unit head Jagdish Thakor said the party president has approved the proposal for the nomination of  Chavda as the leader and  Parmar as the deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state.  Chavda, aged 46, is the 5-term legislator hailing from Anand district in central Gujarat. He served as the state Congress president between 2018 and 2021.

Chavda defeated Gulabsinh Padhiyar of the Bharatiya Janata Party to win the Anklav seat in Anand during the Gujarat Assembly elections conducted in December 2022.

The 53-year-old Parmar defeated the BJP's Naresh Vyas to win his fourth election in Ahmedabad's Danilimda seat, which is designated for Scheduled Caste candidates.

Within 30 days of the swearing-in of the newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly, the opposition parties are required by law to name their respective leaders in the House.

On December 19, 2022, Gujarat's 15th Legislative Assembly's members took their oaths of office.

In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the ruling BJP won 156 seats in last month's elections. The Congress came in a distant second with just 17 seats. Five seats were won by the Aam Aadmi Party, three by independents, and one by the Samajwadi Party.
