New Delhi: Ghulam Nabi Azad, one of the 23 leaders who wrote a letter to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi to change the party leadership, said his intention was only to strengthen the party. He said that the Congress president appointed does not have even one percent support in the party. Azad further said that if the elected body leads the party, then the party will be better than before otherwise, the Congress will remain in opposition for the next 50 years.

Ghulam Nabi Azad said that "The officer or the president of the state unit, the district president who is opposing our proposal, is afraid of losing their post". In the meeting of the Congress Working Committee held on Monday, this letter had become a major cause of controversy. Azad said that he intended to strengthen the Congress only. "I am on the working committee for the last 34 years". He said that "Any Congressman who had a little interest in the Congress would have welcomed our proposals. But some people appeared to oppose our proposal. We had said that elections should be held to appoint the president of the state, district, block etc. The same should be done in the Congress Working Committee".

Azad said that "When you contest elections, at least 51 percent people are with you and you fight against only 2 to 3 people inside the party. The person who gets 51 percent votes will be elected. Others will get 10 or 15 percent votes. The person who wins will be given the charge of the party president. This means that 51 percent people are with him".
