Imphall: Curfew has been reinstated in Thoubal district of Manipur due to ongoing violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities since May 3. A statement from A Subhash, the District Magistrate, announced the immediate imposition of curfew throughout the revenue jurisdiction of Thoubal District, restricting the movement of individuals outside their residences. Essential services personnel, including those from health, PHED, MSPDCL/MSPCL, municipalities, and the media, are exempted from the curfew.

Simultaneously, on December 31, curfew was reintroduced in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, following sporadic gunfights between armed miscreants and state police commandos since December 30. The violence initially erupted after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, leading to clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities. The persistent unrest and loss of lives necessitated the deployment of paramilitary forces by the Centre to restore peace.

The imposition of curfew reflects the ongoing challenges in mitigating tensions between the two communities. Despite efforts, sporadic violence has continued, prompting authorities to restrict movement to ensure public safety. The situation underscores the need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of the conflict and establish lasting peace in the region.
