The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for states along the Bay of Bengal as a "Deep Depression" is expected to intensify into Cyclone Remal by Saturday evening. This cyclone is projected to make landfall between Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts by Sunday midnight, potentially reaching severe cyclonic storm status. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and precautionary measures by various agencies highlight the preparedness efforts as coastal states brace for impact.

  1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the "Deep Depression" over the East-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into Cyclone Remal by Saturday evening.
  2. IMD predicts Cyclone Remal will cross between Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts by Sunday midnight and could become a severe cyclonic storm (SCS).
  3. Heavy rainfall is expected from May 24-27, with West Bengal likely to experience extremely heavy showers. Coastal areas of North Odisha may witness isolated heavy rainfall, accompanied by winds reaching 40-50 kmph.
  4. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has deployed nine disaster relief teams in strategic locations like Haldia, Paradip, Gopalpur, and Frazerganj to mitigate potential risks.
  5. The Ministry of Defence has positioned disaster relief teams at key locations, ready to offer immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
  6. The ICG, with 10 ships and 2 aircraft along the East Coast, is monitoring the situation closely. They have advised vessels to avoid the sea and are coordinating with stakeholders for preventive measures.
  7. The Odisha government has instructed authorities in Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj districts to make necessary preparations.
  8. Cyclone Remal, named by Oman, marks the first cyclonic activity in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season.
  9. The severe cyclonic storm may bring wind speeds of 40-50 kmph and heavy rainfall to West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts.
  10. Despite a fishing ban, the Fisheries Department is cautioning country boats about the developing situation.
