DHARAMSALA:  Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama today, may 29, greeted Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election. “These are very challenging times. It is my expectation that Turkiye will carry on to prosper and make a great contribution to the peace and stability of our increasingly interconnected world,'' The His Highness Dalai Lama   wrote in his message to Erdogan.

“I pray that you will be successful in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the wishes and aspirations of the people of Turkiye, especially the less privileged members of society,'' he added.

Erdogan won the re-election on Sunday, extending his rule into 30 years   as the country reels from high inflation and the after-effects of an earthquake that levelled entire cities.

All About Erdogan: Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a Turkish politician who has been serving as the President of Turkey since 2014. He was born on February 26, 1954, in Istanbul, Turkey. Erdogan has been a prominent figure in Turkish politics for several decades and has had a significant impact on the country's political landscape.

Before becoming president, Erdogan served as the Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014, making him the longest-serving prime minister in the country's history. He is a member of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), a conservative and Islamist political party that he co-founded in 2001.

Erdogan's tenure as Prime Minister and later as President has been marked by a mix of achievements and controversies. During his early years in office, he implemented various economic reforms that contributed to Turkey's rapid economic growth and increased its global influence. He also pursued a more assertive foreign policy, emphasizing Turkey's regional role and seeking to position the country as a major player in the Middle East.

However, Erdogan's leadership has also been criticized for its increasingly authoritarian tendencies. Under his rule, there have been concerns about the erosion of democratic institutions, restrictions on freedom of speech and the media, and the crackdown on political dissent. His government has faced accusations of human rights abuses and a deterioration of the rule of law.

In recent years, Erdogan's government has been confronted with various domestic and international challenges. These include political unrest, economic difficulties, conflicts in neighboring Syria and Iraq, and strained relations with some Western countries. Turkey's foreign policy decisions, such as its military intervention in Syria and its disputes over maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean, have further complicated its international relations.
