Indore: Today Former Lok Sabha Speaker and 8-time MP Sumitra Mahajan of Indore has been honoured with Padma Bhushan. She has been given this honour for his special contribution to politics. Sumitra Mahajan had reached Delhi last Monday to receive the Padma Bhushan Award and also met former party national president L K Advani. On the eve of Republic Day this year, she was announced to be awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Speaking on the occasion, Sumitra Mahajan had said, "I have always acted to the best of my ability in all my roles, perhaps that may be the reason why this honour is being given. If your work is authentic, you must get the result. She holds the record of winning the Lok Sabha elections 8 times in a row from Indore Lok Sabha seat. She is the only woman MP in the country to have won eight consecutive Lok Sabha elections.

Sumitra Mahajan became the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha and became the second woman Lok Sabha Speaker in the country. Her political journey began in the 1980s and she was first elected councillor for the Indore Municipal Corporation. He was then made Deputy Mayor of Indore. She was elected MP in the 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 elections and the people of Indore fondly call her 'Tai'.
