Delhi High Court: 10 Additional Judges Elevated to Permanent Positions

NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Law Ministry announced that ten additional judges have been promoted to permanent positions. This includes three judges from the Delhi High Court. The ministry’s notifications confirmed that seven additional judges from the Bombay High Court have also been elevated to permanent judges. Also the  promotion of three additional judges to permanent positions at the Delhi High Court. Justice Girish Katpalia, Justice Manoj Jain, and Justice Dharmesh Sharma have been confirmed as permanent judges of the Delhi High Court.

This move follows a recent recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium. On March 12, the Delhi High Court's Collegium unanimously proposed the elevation of these additional judges to permanent roles.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, consultations were held with Supreme Court judges familiar with the Delhi High Court to evaluate the suitability of these judges for permanent appointments. A committee formed by the Chief Justice of India, as per the Supreme Court Collegium’s resolution dated October 26, 2017, reviewed and rated the quality of their judgments as ‘good.’

The Collegium reviewed all relevant materials and observations from the Department of Justice. After a thorough assessment, the Collegium concluded that Justices Girish Katpalia, Manoj Jain, and Dharmesh Sharma are well-qualified to serve as permanent judges.

Consequently, the Collegium has recommended the appointment of these three judges to fill the current vacancies at the Delhi High Court.
