Bengaluru: After the final list of NRC in Assam, there has been a debate on it all over the country. Many BJP-ruled states have spoken of implementing it in their own too. At the same time, Amit Shah has spoken about implementing NRC across the country. After Assam, a new detention centre has also been constructed in Karnataka. A detention centre is being set up at Nelamangala in Bengaluru rural district of Karnataka to house illegal foreigners.

"A hostel operating in the state is being converted into a detention centre to house illegal foreign nationals," Bangalore Rural Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohan Kumar told IANS over phone. Nelamangala is about 40 km northwest of Bengaluru on Tumakuru on National Highway-4 towards Pune and Mumbai. Mohan Kumar told IANS, 'The 8-room ground floor building with open space in the campus will be converted to suit the needs of a detention centre.

Most fool-proof security in the detention centre will be arranged. It has closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs), floodlights, barbed fences and surveillance. There will be a system of monitoring of prisoners. This is the first such centre in the southern states. It is too early to say when it will be ready to turn it around and provide housing to illegal foreign nationals. State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai has said that the Detention Center will be made operational soon.
