Many buildings have been damaged in eastern Indonesia due to the effects of a severe deep-sea earthquake. Earthquake tremors were also felt in northern Australia. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said two school buildings and 124 houses were damaged in Indonesia's Tanimbar Islands and Southwest Maluku districts.

Many houses were damaged due to strong tremors: Agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a statement that, "Local residents have felt strong tremors for three to five seconds." Fear is spreading among the people and they came out of their houses when the tremor was felt. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Banda Sea near Tanimbar Islands where the population is about 1,27,000. The tremors of this 7.6 magnitude earthquake have also been felt in Northern Australia including Papua and East Nusa Tenggara provinces.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency have also issued a tsunami warning after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which has been withdrawn after three hours. Agency chief Dwikorita Karnavati has said about this, "According to the data of instruments measuring sea waves near the epicenter, there is no change in sea level or any other problem."

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake is reported to be at a depth of 105 kilometers near the northern tip of Australia. When the epicenter of an earthquake is at depth, it causes less damage on the surface, but its tremors are felt over a larger area. According to the 'Geoscience Australia Agency', earthquake tremors have been felt by more than 1,000 people at various places in northern Australia including the city of Darwin. According to 'The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center,' the earthquake has not yet caused a tsunami threat to the mainland or any island or region.
