Ebrahim Raisi says Iran "never places hopes" on Vienna nuclear talks

TEHRAN: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has stated that Iran never places its hopes in the Vienna talks aimed at resurrecting the 2015 nuclear accord, instead relying on its people and local resources.

"Counting on foreigners to help us has resulted in issues. Great strides toward economic independence will be made thanks to the efforts of our people and the government's service "Raisi said in a televised speech honouring the 43rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution's victory in Tehran on Friday.

"Looking to the West has imbalanced the country," he said, adding that his administration is working to achieve a "balanced" foreign policy and that it "must pay attention to all countries, especially our neighbours."

Iran agreed to some constraints on its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of Western sanctions under the nuclear accord concluded in June 2015. Former US President Donald Trump, however, unilaterally withdrew the US from the agreement in 2018 and reintroduced sanctions against Iran, which reacted by abandoning some of its promises, according reports.

Several rounds of talks have been place in Vienna, Austria's capital, between Iran and the other signatories to the nuclear deal, with the US indirectly involved, since April 2021, in an attempt to salvage the historic nuclear accord.
