The Odisha State Election Commission (SEC) has announced a change in the spending limit for candidates running for councillors and corporators, chairpersons, and mayors in the state's upcoming local body elections.

The limit on expenditure that may be incurred by a candidate for election as Councillor/Corporator/Chairperson/Mayor to a NAC/ Municipality/ Municipal Corporation has been revised in exercise of the powers conferred under Sub-Section (1) of Section 17-A of the Odisha Municipal Act, 1950 and Section-82 of the Odisha Municipal Corporation Act, 2003 and after consultation, the State Election Commission said in a notification.

According to the updated expenditure restrictions, a candidate running for Councillor or Corporator in NACs/Municipalities with a population of up to 50,000 people can spend up to Rs 50,000, while a candidate running for Chairperson or Mayor in the same region can spend up to Rs 2.
