Panna: There is good news for the people of Madhya Pradesh. Diamonds coming out of the land of Panna district, popular for diamond mines worldwide, have got a GI tag. Diamond officer Ravi Patel said that the application for the GI tag was made on June 7. "The GI (Geographical Indication) tag is mainly given to link a product to its region of origin. The object that receives this tag states its characteristic."  

An application was made by the Human Welfare Society Lucknow to the Chennai-based institution to get the GI tag for the emerald diamonds. This organization, working under the Ministry of Commerce of India, gives the GI tag after thorough investigation and scrutiny. Panna district has been known for its precious diamonds for centuries. This is the reason why Panna is also known as Diamond City. Getting the GI tag will increase the brightness of emerald diamonds internationally. This will also benefit individuals associated with the diamond trade of Panna. Darjeeling tea got the first GI tag in India in the year 2004.

Since then, many products that have become the identity of different regions and regions of the country have received the GI tag. These include saffron and Pashmina shawls from Kashmir, oranges from Nagpur, Bengali rasgullas, Banarasi sarees, laddoos from Tirupati, apples from Ratlam, Bikaneri Bhujia, Kadaknath from Jhabua, Chanderi sarees, Paan from Mahoba, etc.
