Chennai: An FIR has been filed against K Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu state President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Sabha candidate from Coimbatore, along with Coimbatore District BJP Secretary Ramesh. They are accused of campaigning beyond the permitted hours in the Avarampalayam area, violating the election code of conduct for parliamentary elections, which dictates campaign limits until 10 pm.

Reports suggest that Annamalai was present in the region after the designated time due to the extension of his campaign. Previously, on April 12, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Nara Lokesh showed support for Annamalai by participating in a joint roadshow ahead of the seven-phased general elections. The TDP, once a partner in the BJP-led NDA, recently rekindled its alliance with the ruling coalition at the Centre.

BJP national president JP Nadda confirmed the TDP's return to the NDA, announcing that the two parties would contest Lok Sabha elections and Andhra assembly polls together. Praising Annamalai as a dynamic and dedicated young leader, Lokesh commended his recent padayatra (foot march), which showcased his deep understanding of people's issues in Tamil Nadu.

The first phase of general elections in Tamil Nadu, covering 39 Lok Sabha seats, is scheduled for April 19, with vote counting set for June 4.
