Fears of floods in many areas due to heavy rains in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has experienced heavy rains on Wednesday due to the formation of low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, which has led to the possibility of flooding in different areas of the state. The rains have submerged the lower reaches of the Raj, road connectivity has been broken and at least two people have died. Officers have reported this. Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena said that from Tuesday, all the thirty districts of the state are getting rain of different intensity. Heavy rainfall occurred in 9 districts of the state, resulting in water logging in many low-lying areas.

The state has recorded an average of 76.6 mm of rain in the last twenty four hours till 9 am, whereas in 9 districts this figure was more than 100 mm. In the same period, 4 blocks in the state have received more than 200 mm of rain on average. In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, 92 mm and 77 mm rain respectively. Jena has further told that many lower areas have been submerged in water in the districts like Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Jagatsinghpur. These include paddy fields and roads. Steps are being taken to remove water. Jena further told that a 62-year-old man died in the incident of falling of a wall in Mahuasuli village in Sukurili area of Mayurbhanj district. On the other hand, the police said that the driver died in the incident of a truck overturning in Mayurbhanj district.

During this time, the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Bardgarh, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Deogarh and Kalahandi districts where heavy to very heavy rains can occur till Thursday. The department has issued an 'Orange' warning for Puri, Khurda, Angalu, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj and Kandhamal districts where heavy to very heavy rains may occur at some places.
