Former AIADMK minister R Indira Kumari gets 5 years in jail for misappropriation

Tamil Nadu: N Alicia, the presiding officer of the special court to hear cases against MPs and MLAs, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), on Wednesday held former AIADMK minister R Indira Kumari and her The husband A Babu was convicted in the case of embezzlement of Rs 15 lakh of government money and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) of five years each. A CB-CID release said they were fined Rs 10,000 each, failing which they had to undergo RI of six months. The case was investigated by the CB-CID. Indira Kumari was the Social Welfare Minister in the late J Jayalalithaa-led cabinet during the period 1991-96. Kumari later joined the DMK in 2006.

In addition to PCA, the couple were convicted of "120(b) IPC (criminal conspiracy) and 409 IPC (criminal breach of trust by public servant)." The court also sentenced retired IAS officer P Shanmugam to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him, failing which he would have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for six months. He then served as the Director of Rehabilitation for the Disabled.

The court acquitted R Venkatakrishnan, a former personal assistant (PA) to the former minister. The charges against another IAS officer R Kirubakaran, the then secretary of the Social Welfare Department, were dropped as he died during the trial. According to the prosecution, the accused colluded with each other and misused the government funds of Rs 15.45 lakh allotted to run the two trusts.
