New Delhi: Amar Jawan Jyoti, who has been burning at India Gate in the country's capital Delhi for the past 50 years, will be merged with a burning flame at the National War Memorial today. Amar Jawan Jyoti was established in memory of indian soldiers who were martyred in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. India succeeded in this war and Bangladesh was formed. It was inaugurated by the then PM Indira Gandhi on January 26, 1972.

The same government's decision prompted Lt Gen (Retd), former Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Indian Army, Vinod Bhatia on Friday to praise the Centre's decision to merge Amar Jawan Jyoti with the war memorial. He said, 'This is a good decision.' Today is a great opportunity, Amar Jawan Jyoti is being merged with the National War Memorial at India Gate. Amar Jawan Jyoti respects our jawans for 50 years in 1971.

Further, he said, "We have a national war memorial that honors about 25,000 soldiers and sailors who have made the supreme sacrifice in the defence of the country. The time has come for Amar Jawan Jyoti to be transferred to merge with it. Lt Gen JBS Yadav (Retd), a veteran of the 1971 war and former Army Deputy Chief, also supported the Centre's decision and said, 'Amar Jawan Jyoti should be merged with the National War Memorial.
