Pervez Musharraf has been the President and Army Chief of Pakistan. He took over the command of Pakistan in 1999 by overthrowing the democratic government of Nawaz Sharif and was the President of Pakistan from June 20, 2001, to August 18, 2008. During Musharraf's tenure, terrorist attacks on India increased. In 2005, Parade magazine included Musharraf in the list of the world's 10 worst dictators.
Musharraf was also arrested in connection with the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Balochistan nationalist leader Akbar Khan Bugti and the red mosque demolition.
