New Delhi: The Delhi Police has called off the sit-in protest by wrestlers who have been protesting at Jantar Jantar for the past one month. The Delhi Police said that despite all the requests and persuasions, the wrestlers violated the law. The wrestlers did not accept any of the conditions laid down by the police. Therefore, now they will not be allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar. If he wants to stage a sit-in elsewhere, it can be approved.

 

Speaking to the media, Delhi Police Commissioner Suman Nalwa said that Pehalwans had been protesting at Jantar Mantar for the last 38 days. The Delhi Police has given them all the facilities that are not given to any ordinary protesters. A variety of facilities ranging from generators were provided to the wrestlers. These wrestlers were not constantly sitting at the protest site, they kept coming and going. But, his well-wishers used to sit at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police Commissioner further said that there was a continuous dialogue with the wrestlers for the candle march held on May 23. The police had requested not to take out a march there due to the high security zone. However, the wrestlers stuck to their point. After this, the police took out their march under security cover there too. Commissioner Suman Nalwa has said that the new Parliament was to be inaugurated on Sunday 28 May. So that day and time were very important. Therefore, no agency can allow such a protest in view of law and order.

 

He has further said that the police had a discussion with the wrestlers and urged them not to do so. However, he refused to listen to anything. The wrestlers and their supporters were forced into custody when they tried to march towards Parliament House despite being denied permission. Women police personnel detained the women wrestlers. Even at that time, these people did a lot of spectacles by lying on the streets and in other ways. They were released in the evening after being detained. Despite getting all the facilities, these people were forced to be detained only after the kind of activities they have done.

The Police Commissioner has further said that the police had put some conditions before the wrestlers regarding law and order and security. However, none of these conditions have been accepted by the protesters. So if he seeks permission to perform at some other place, it can be approved. But now they will not be allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar.
