New Delhi: The Global Hunger Index (GHI) of 116 countries has slipped to the 101st position in 2021. Last year, in 2020, India was ranked 94th out of 107 countries. India has also lagged behind its neighbours Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal in the index. The report said that people in India have been badly affected by the coronavirus epidemic and the restrictions imposed thereon.

A report jointly prepared by Irish agency Concern Worldwide and German Organisation Welt Hunger Hilf has termed the level of starvation in India as "alarming." According to the report, neighbouring countries like Nepal (76), Bangladesh (76), Myanmar (71) and Pakistan (92) are also in the 'alarming' hunger category. Eighteen countries including China, Brazil and Kuwait have secured the top rank. Their GHI score is less than five. India's GHI score is 27.5.

State that the GHI score is calculated on the basis of four indicators - undernourishment (malnutrition), child vesting (children below five years of age who weigh less than their height), child stunting (children below five years of age who have low height) and child mortality (mortality rate of children under five years of age).
