Ahmedabad: Ahead of the second phase of assembly elections in Gujarat, the BJP government in the state on Friday refused to go soft on granting bail to the convicts in the 2002 Godhra train burning case. After this incident, communal riots broke out in the entire state. Despite the Supreme Court saying that some of them were stone pelters and have been in jail for a long time. The convicts' appeal has been pending in the apex court since 2018.

A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha said the convicts have been in jail for 17-18 years and the court will consider granting at least bail to those accused of stone-pelting. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that this is not a case of stone-pelting. Due to stone-pelting, the victims were prevented from coming out of the burning coach, it cannot be called stone-pelting alone.

In 2017, the Gujarat High Court commuted the death sentence of 11 convicts to life imprisonment. At the same time, the life sentence of 20 convicts was upheld. At the same time, the court acquitted 63 accused in this case. On February 27, 2002, 59 Hindu pilgrims were burnt alive when a Muslim mob set fire to the Sabarmati express train compartment near Godhra station in Gujarat. Not only this, the crowd was constantly throwing stones from outside so that no one could get out of the coach of the burning train.
