BANGALORE: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Central government has cleared GST dues totaling Rs 8,800 crore and that the remaining balance would be reimbursed shortly.
The Chief Minister told reporters that his government had asked the union government to extend the GST compensation term by an additional two years, but that request had been denied due to laws. But they are giving us what we deserve. They (the Center) only recently gave us Rs. 8,800 crore. The remaining sum will be paid. There is no question," he said.
The state government has made it plain that the GST compensation may only be paid for five years and cannot be extended further, Bommai said while speaking with regard to the extending of the GST compensation beyond five years.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the central government pays the state's portion of the GST. The collection was practically nonexistent throughout the COVID period, and the GST stated that reimbursement would only be granted if there was a collection. He clarified that even though there was no collection, the Center nonetheless paid compensation.
On July 1st, 2017, the goods and services tax (GST) was introduced and put into effect. According to the GST (Compensation to States) Act of 2017, all states were guaranteed compensation for revenue losses resulting from the implementation of the new tax system over a five-year period.
In response to a query regarding the local body elections in the state and elsewhere, Bommai stated that the Supreme Court would receive the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Chief Commissioner's report on the delimitation and reserving of wards on July 22.
