Ahmedabad: A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Kutch district of Gujarat on Sunday. It is also reported that no loss of life or property has been reported. In fact, the Seismological Research Institute (ISR), Gandhinagar, has recently informed about this. He says the earthquake occurred around 8:38 a.m. which was centred at a depth of 9.3 km, 26 kilometres northeast of Dudhai. On the other hand, the Kutch District Disaster Management Unit said that there is no report of any loss of life and property.

Let me tell you all that Kutch, located in a 'highly high seismic area' more than 300 kilometres from Ahmedabad, regularly has a mild earthquake. In fact, just a short while ago, on 21st August this year, there was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the district, which was near Dhaulavira. At the same time, the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority says that the 2001 Kutch earthquake was the third-largest earthquake in the last two centuries and the most devastating earthquake in India that killed thousands of people.

How to stay safe during an earthquake-

* If you are inside a building, sit on the floor and go under strong furniture.
* Stay away from buildings, trees, pillars, and wires if you're out of the building.
* If you are travelling in a vehicle, stop the vehicle as soon as possible and sit inside the vehicle.
* If you are buried in a pile of debris, never light matches, move or push anything.
* Lightly pat a pipe or wall in case it is buried in the debris or whistle.
* Always keep disaster relief kits ready in your home.
