In Guwahati, Assam, law enforcement authorities have uncovered a massive scam operation, dismantling eight illegal call centers engaged in fraudulent activities under the guise of providing technical support. The scam primarily targeted both Indians and individuals from foreign countries. Following this discovery, three suspected masterminds have been apprehended, and an additional 191 individuals have been detained in connection with the scam.

Acting on credible intelligence, a joint operation involving the Assam Police Crime Branch and Guwahati Police conducted raids at multiple locations in Guwahati. Their efforts exposed a network of illegal call centers, operating deceitfully and utilizing Bitcoin and hawala channels for money transactions over the past two years.

The call centers had a workforce comprising employees from various parts of the country. Guwahati Police Commissioner, Diganta Borah, revealed that the scammers impersonated technical support staff or customer support representatives from reputable companies, banks, government agencies, or online service providers. They employed tactics such as using pop-ups on computers or making phone calls to create a sense of urgency among their targets.

The fraudulent operations involved coercing victims to install remote desktop software on their devices, subsequently gaining unauthorized access to their bank accounts and stealing crucial personal information using malware. The scammers employed fake toll-free numbers and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls, illustrating a well-planned modus operandi.

Some of the call centers had even acquired lease line connections with forged documents from various internet service providers, effectively mimicking a fabricated internet-based telephone exchange. This aspect raised concerns about potential threats to national security. The police have taken stringent actions to dismantle this fraudulent network and prevent further exploitation of unsuspecting individuals.
