Flood disrupts normal life in country's south-west state

Thiruvananthapuram: Many parts of the country are reeling under floods due to heavy rains these days. In the beginning, after the north-east, the rains are now wreaking havoc in the south-west. In Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, heavy rains have caused extensive damage to life and property. So far 136 people have died in these States. The situation in Kerala is the worst hit where 57 people died and around 1.65 lakh people have been shifted to relief camps. According to official data, eight districts of Kerala are in flood situation.

Among them, 19 people died in Mallpuram and 14 in Kozhikode. The landslide occurred at 80 places. 198 houses have been completely destroyed in the state. 1318 relief camps have been set up in the State in which 165519 people have been evacuated. Army, NDRF and Air Force teams are carrying out rescue operations. The Met department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in three states of Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod.

In Kerala, in the last year's floods also, 400 people lost their lives and lakhs of people were rendered homeless. In Karnataka also, the death toll has gone up to 24. The Southern Railway has announced a special train to Ernakulam-Chennai, Chennai-Kolam and Bengaluru-Kollam to help the flood victims. The Kochi airport will also be operational from 12 noon on Sunday. In addition, 19 people died in Gujarat. Rahul Gandhi will visit Wayanad today which is also his parliamentary constituency.
