Mahasamund: The Chhattisgarh high court on Thursday held a midnight hearing. It also became clear that the court could open at any time to give justice to the needy. The court, while granting interim relief to the villagers, has banned them from being evicted from their homes till August 11.

The incident took place at Bagbahara in the Mahasamund district. The people of the village living in the forest there for years were issued eviction warrants by the tehsildar. Panicked villagers moved to the High Court at 8 pm. The petitioner's advocate referred to the urgent hearing through the registry. It was requested that in view of the seriousness of the matter, Justice P Sam Koshy stayed the proceedings while hearing the matter at 11 pm. This has brought some relief to the people of the village. The next hearing of the case will be on August 10.

The same villagers had been living on government land for 75 years at Lalpur in the Bagbahra area of Mahasamund district. The administration arrived late in the evening to demolish their house. The sabotage had begun. Vaqar Nayyar, Shantam Awasthi, Pranjal Shukla, Faiz Kazi and Abhishek Banjare, counsels for villagers Phuldas Kosaria and Yogesh, told the registry officials that there should be an urgent hearing on the petition filed by the villagers of Mahasamund district. Registry officials contacted Chief Justice Arup Kumar Goswami. On his direction, Justice P Sam Koshy heard the case and granted a stay while admitting the petition.
