Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has delivered a landmark verdict in a case related to abortion. The court has allowed a 36-year-old pregnant woman to undergo an abortion in the 35th week of her pregnancy. This is the first time in the country that a court has approved the termination of 35 weeks of pregnancy.

The court gave its verdict in the case on Thursday. A petition was filed in the High Court by the woman and her husband for abortion. A bench headed by Justice Rajasekhar Matha, in its order, said the woman can undergo abortion from a team of doctors at the state government-run SSKM Hospital. However, the responsibility for any complications during the abortion will be her.

On this matter, the court had constituted a team of doctors of SSKM Hospital. The team tested the woman and submitted the medical report before the court. The report said that under no circumstances can the normal delivery of the child be done. The medical board had also said in its report that if somehow this child is born, he will not be able to lead a normal life. After which the high court allowed the woman to have an abortion.
